This work explores stories during collectivisation of farms in rural Ukraine. Millions of people died during Soviet collectivisation. This work is practice-based research as part of my PhD at Leeds Beckett University. This work has supervision by Professor Lisa Stansbie and Professor Simon Morris. Context of this practice explores gaps between traditional animation and contemporary motion graphics and TV production. This work had part funding from Arts Council England as part of an Artists’ International Development Award. This funding supported a residency and exhibitions in partnership with the Holodomor Museum in Kyiv in 2017 and a UK show in partnership with Islington Mill, Salford. These five short films appear from interviews with leading historians, academics and individuals with connection to stories from Ukraine. Total running length 5’30”. This work is a collaboration with The School of Life. Scripts and voice overs by Alain de Botton, music by Yoni Collier. This work explores love, feelings, depths of emotion, attachment, fantasies and reality. A similar theme appears in The Outsider, by Albert Camus. “To a certain extent all normal people sometimes wished their loved ones were dead” (2000, p. 65). Camus’ position is an existential one. In this work de Botton takes this view further. A film exploring dark feelings, emotions, attachment to other people and how these fantasies and feelings can reflect deep and very human bonds. This brief was to celebrate archives of rugby league coverage on BBC Sport. These archives date back to 1930s and BBC Sport has always held rights for the Challenge Cup. My creative explores uses of images, sequences and animation, taking reference from a Paul Bush film While Darwin Sleeps. This takes visuals from archival presentations and uses specific moments in histories of Challenge Cup broadcasting through decades. This uses visual cues. This work is also a celebration of the Challenge Cup. Paying reference to a sporting event using motion graphics. This is one of three reversions for rugby league events. Running time 0’44”. It was appeared at galleries for exhibitions and screenings. Part of my original commission was an online version of this with an interactive drawing tool by David Hunter. She is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Digital Design at SODA, the School of Digital Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Creative Digital Design Degree Apprenticeship programme. Sara’s digital projects explore preservation and narratives in history through the production of digital and film artefacts (for example websites and short films). Her current manuscript project, “Pich: A Visual History of the Ukrainian Oven” explores the role of the stove in Ukrainian cultural narrative, folklore and linguistic development. Forthcoming book chapters include writing for “The Holodomor in Global Perspective” (ibidem Press, October 2025) and “Both Sides Face East” (forthcoming, Academic Studies Press). Sara is a member of the UKRI Peer Review College for AHRC and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She received her doctorate from Leeds Beckett University’s School of Arts. Awards include an Arts Council England Artists’ International Development Award and winner of Best Experimental Short Film at Intershort Festival. Design and layout with InDesign templates is with Shyam Patel. Grids and margins adhere to a golden ratio structure for layouts. I use a fibonacci sequence for all typesetting. Main body text is in Baskerville, an 18th century British font by John Baskerville. Inspiration for this design was from Cosmo Eggs. This is a catalogue for Japanese pavilion artworks from Venice in 2019. Design by Yoshihisa Tanaka. A copy of this I received from professor Simon Morris. This is a physical object. Soanyway Issue Ten: Ten Conversations. September 2021. One section of Recipes for Baking Bread appears in Soanyway issue Ten: Ten Conversations. This issue explores themes of conversation using artistic practice, music, dance, performance, written and visual art. In my work conversation appears through dialogue and exchange in letters. These letters are a family collection belonging to independent writer Alison Marshall. Letters are from an engineer from South Africa, Jerry Berman, who wrote to friends in London, Meyer and Sonia Fortes, Alison’s grandparents, during Holodomor. These letters provide first hand testimonies and witness to events in Ukraine during 1932–1933. I organised for Alison to meet curator Yana Grinko from the Holodomor Museum in Kyiv.An exhibition of these letters appeared at the museum in September 2021. My film piece was part of this exhibition using QR codes to access work online. A selection of these letters is now in permanent collection at the exhibition. Audiences can arrange, re-arrange, order and re-order these postcards. Design for these postcards and ideas is with Shyam Patel. Typesetting is in Baskerville with printing on Munken Cream 300gsm card and riso print wrapper. On one side of each postcard is a quote and on reverse sides is a drawing of books of source materials. This connects to my drawn bibliographies. A limited edition set of these postcards is due for release in early 2022 as an edition of 100. Costs to buy are £12.00 or £14.00 with postage. Recipes for Baking Bread appeared at British Shorts in Berlin in January 2022. This is my first festival screening for this work. This festival took place from 20–26 of January. Recipes for Baking Bread appeared in a documentary special with live action and animation. This is exciting to consider this film in a cinema screening with live audiences. One highlight of this festival ismy work featuring alongside a special collection of films by Max Cooper and McGloughlin Brothers. Thiswork inspired my music production with Yoni Collier for Recipes for Baking Bread. Cooper’s work I firstencountered through an introduction to his practice by Richard Gort, production executive on Recipes forBaking Bread.
